For one of his products to be labeled “fine craftsmanship” is the biggest compliment for Dick van Hoff. He stresses, though, that he is not interested in perfection. His products are simply made, usually of rough materials. The Swivel Light he designed for Functionals is a striking example: it has bold lines and is made of durable powder-coated steel.
For Dick Van Hoff, “the relationship between product and user are of paramount importance.” He relishes the thought that his products will continue to evolve over time as their owners spill on them, mark them, and nick them. A graduate of Arnhem's School of Art, van Hoff is now a lecturer at Design Academy Eindhoven, influencing the next generation of Dutch designers.
